EHOB Newsletter
Happy 2014 from EHOB! While we are just beginning the process of thawing out from a major winter storm that froze central Indiana in its tracks, we know that life goes on despite Mother Nature. People still have health issues and need critical care, and we think of those people especially during times when the weather makes a difficult situation a bit harder.

We invite you to read the blogs below, written by nurses about how our products make life better for those in difficult situations, and also how nurses — always patient advocates — are working to help their patients understand how the Affordable Health Care Act affects them.

Finally, we'd like to invite you to have a little New Year's fun — there's even a prize involved! See the info on our New Year's Resolution Contest at the end of this message.

Is the title of a recent AARP magazine article. It went on to inform its many readers that nearly one in five Medicare beneficiaries discharged from hospitals in the US returns within 30 days at a cost of more than 17 BILLION dollars a year. How scary that is for all of us to think about, especially the elderly. Not only from a potential patient prospective, but also from a financial standpoint as a tax-paying US citizen. And while the article went on to mention that a significant portion of those readmissions are related to medication-related problems, in the nursing world we know that many are also related to patients not always having a clear understanding of post discharge instructions about how to mange their ongoing medical issues at home.

In the last two months I've had two dear friends, both of whom are healthcare professionals with long experience in acute care, who have experienced health care up close and personal as daughters of very sick mothers. Both of thesse friends have a long history of using the EHOB, Inc. product line and are "-wise", ordering overlays, seat cushions and Foot WAFFLE pressure redistribution products for their fragile patients on a regular basis. And both of my dear friends have called, almost in awe, to tell me just how valuable these products have been in reducing their own mothers' pain. Although these strong women (both mothers and daughters) are tougher than nails and have weathered many storms, appreciation for pain reduction, some hours of comfort, or an easier transfer from bed to cart when everything hurts just to touch seems to be universal.

As patient advocates, nurses are in the distinct position to be trusted advisors to the public regarding the Affordable Care Act (ACA). Historically nurses have been leaders in prevention, wellness, and primary care improving quality and controlling costs. The American Nurses Association (ANA) has been working for many years to secure health care reform. Passage of the Affordable Care Act intention is to increase access to quality health care for ALL, promote health, expand primary care, improve access for underserved areas and control costs. With a heavy focus on prevention, patients will be responsible to take ownership of their care. To do so they will need education about health and navigating the health care system.

You're invited to participate in EHOB's New Year's Resolution Contest.
