Foot Waffle® Heel Cushion Study

Janice Mentz, RN, BSN, CETN

Mrs. V.M. was admitted 2/3/97 to a local hospital with a yeast infection from her waist to her toes, multiple Stage II wounds to her coccyx, two Stage III wounds to her left lateral mid-calf and an eschar covered left heel. The yeast infection was caused from the patient being left in wet diapers and bed linens for extended periods of time. The left third toe gangrene was dry and intact without any erythema or drainage. The patient was unable to move the left side of her body from a prior CVAin 1996. From the decrease in mobility status, the wounds on her left lateral midcalf developed, secondary to leg rotating to prone position.

Outcomes

The wound on the left heel showed marked improvement within two weeks of the aggressive treat- ment plan. The two Stage III wounds on the left lateral mid-calf measuring 1 cm. x 0.75 cm. and 0.5 cm. x 0.5 cm. healed within two weeks of the new treatment plan. The clinician was unable to follow the patient after her discharge to hospice on 3/6/97. The patient died 3/22/97.
